The Historical Setting of Philippi and the Philippians
The book of philippians is about people who had a genuine concern for one another. Paul noticed, and greatly appreciated this quality in his christian brothers and sisters. These christians worried about each other, prayed for one another, talked about one another, and helped one another.
In fact, in philippians 2:12 and 4:1 paul referred to the philippians as his dear friends, using the greek word agapētos. Agapētos is the term paul commonly used to describe his closest coworkers and beloved friends such as tychicus, epaphras, philemon, onesimus, and luke.
The people there were both romans and greeks and spoke predominantly greek even though latin was the official language. The church in philippi was founded by the apostle paul on his second missionary journey, recorded in acts 16:1-40. Paul originally went to macedonia because of a night vision described for us in acts 16:9.
On hearing that paul and silas were romans, the magistrates were struck with fear and, coming down personally, “entreated them,” brought them out, and requested that they leave the city. (acts 16:35-40) nevertheless, paul had established a fine congregation in philippi, one that was always dear to his heart.
The fellowship in philippi was the first european church founded by paul. This was likely one of the primary reasons why this particular church had a unique, strong bond with the apostle. Although composed primarily of those who were poor, the church sent supplies to paul several times.
Paul might have heard of these struggles from epaphroditus, who had come to him from the philippian church before falling ill (philippians 2:25). First, the philippian christians were warned about those paul labels as dogs. Unlike today's domesticated pets, dogs in first century philippi were generally wild pack animals.
Philippians 4:2 “i beseech (or i beg) euodias, and beseech syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the lord. ” now these are two ladies that evidently had some differences of opinion in the philippian congregation, but they were active. A lot of people think that paul was anti-feminist, and always putting women down.
I also tend to agree, based on the date i place on the letter to philippi, that the ‘false teachers’ were the judaizers that were close to or the same group of people that paul talked about in his letter to the galatian church. In chapter 3 paul goes into detail boasting about who he is, what he is, and what he has done.

Marchal’s edited volume the people beside paul: the philippian assembly and history from below represents a significant addition to this trend, offering a glimpse into current scholarly conversations about the people in philippi who corresponded with paul. Who are the people beside paul, and what can we know about them? this volume brings together an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars representing a range of expertise with a common interest: philippi in antiquity.
The first was timothy, of whom the philippians learned the proof that he honestly cared for their state (philippians 2:19 - 25) and the second was luke. Timothy seems to have rejoined paul and silas, if not at thessalonica, at least at berea. The two beaten evangelists then set off to visit thessalonica.
—the first the note of joy: rejoice, he is always crying, and this is the more noble because, as you remember, he wrote as a prisoner and as one in chains. And the point reminds us once more that no chain can ever fetter the free.
(13) i count not myself--the i is emphatic, evidently in contrast with some of those who thought themselves perfect. Paul refuse to count that he has ever yet attained; he will not allow that he is yet in a position even to grasp at the prize.

Paul names several people beside himself in his letter to the philippians. These include timothy (phil 1:1; 2:19–24), epaphroditus (phil 2:25–30; 4:10–20), euodia, syntyche, and clement (phil 4:2–3).
